End Film

The 3 legitimate people and 1,000,000 spammers who still follow this photoblog will have noticed that the updates are few and far between. While I attempted to revive the thing a few weeks ago, it's clear that I can't make the commitment necessary to keep it going, and I'm doing no service to the photoblogging community by posting every few months.

So I regret to announce that I will no longer be posting here and I've turned comments off, although the site will remain live for a while longer. I want to thank blogTO (Toronto), Spacing magazine (Toronto), Better Photography magazine (India), and Photoblogs.org for recognizing my work. I also sincerely thank the dozens of supporters and fellow bloggers who commented here and who's work I greatly admire. I'll continue to post on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/24by36/) which requires somewhat less commitment than the blog.

I'm all over Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn so it's not hard to track me down (if that's what you want). And you can always see my real (paid) work at http://www.richardalmasi.com.

Keep shooting and have fun.
Naked in Paris

There is something very angular about everything in this photo: the trees, the chairs, the path, and the shadows. It's certainly not the friendliest-looking part of Luxembourg Gardens in Paris but nobody seemed to mind. This shot begged for a square crop and a B & W treatment to bring out the interplay of light.

All of the issues with the site seem to be fixed so I'm back up-and-running again. I'm still toying with making iterative changes to the site, including EXIF data. Soon. Maybe.

Hana, one month

As you can tell, the photoblog's been neglected. Forgotten. Weeds have started growing in. I can provide a list of excuses (work, purchased new home, created new baby) but none are valid.

Actually, no, that's not right. They're all perfectly valid. And these things take time, time, time.

I contemplated shutting down the site and moving everything over to Flickr, but this site is still getting traffic and comments. It's approaching 1,000,000 visits since inception. And because of it, I've been published in local and not-so-local magazines.

So I'm back, the blog is back, and I'm using my new little girl as the comeback cover photo. Say "hello" to Hana, born August 5, 2009. Welcome back.

The Alexander Henry #2

Does absence make the heart grow fonder? I think it does. I've been away from photo taking, photo blogging, and anything photo related for a while. I've worked, went away to Europe for nearly 3 weeks, acquired a new computer (a Dell XPS M1330) and monitor (a Samsung 245T), and we're now starting to look at purchasing our first home of our own in Toronto (which isn't an easy task given the fiercely competitive real estate market here). My cameras didn't fit into my schedule much lately but I started visiting some photo blogs yesterday and the first thing I wanted to do after was to run out an start shooting. I didn't get out this weekend, but I have a load of photos that need processing and posting, starting here.

This is the same ship as the previous post, from a vastly different angle, and vastly different processing. I suspect it may be too dark for some, but I like the stressed/faded processing with the decaying metal of the ship.

Quick question: does anyone know of any good Photoshop tutorials that can help out with colour profiles, specifically with Photoshop CS3 and Windows Vista? My monitor has been calibrated and profiled and I haven't had issues with CS2 and XP in the past, but the new software seems to bugger up the colours on export.

I've been MIA for a while and it's time that I got back into this again. I haven't shot much lately which is too bad, but I've got lots of images to process.

The Alexander Henry is docked in Kingston, Ontario and operated as an icebreaker from 1958 to 1984. It's now a museum ship, and apparently operates as a B & B.

UPDATE 04.07.08: I'm going to be away from the website for a while, so I've temporarily disabled comments. I'ev been back in early May, promise!

I don't usually do square crops, but this one fit nicely.

A little further back, please

Taken on an old TTC streetcar. I don't know the era, but according to the sign inside, cash fare was 10 cents at the time. And just yesterday they were talking about a fare hike to $3.00. Ouch. If you're a TTC regular, you'll understand the title.

There's been some talk here and on my Flickr pages about post-processing. I did some selective desaturation on this one and added some vignetting. Everything else is as the camera saw it.

I thought of twisting it to "ON" to see what would happen. Some of the trains at the Halton County Radial Railway actually run. It would have been interesting if this one would start -- it's not every day that I am accused of trying to steal an 80-year-old streetcar.
I shot this handheld at ISO 1600. It's amazing how much detail the D80 sees even at high ISOs. I love it.
